What Jesus Said About Money & Possessions

What Jesus Said About Money & Possessions
by Keith Tondeur
Monarch Books, 1998

The approach of this book is to view stewardship through Jesus sayings, especially the parables. This book is not designed to be a practical book. The style is more to outline principles and to encourage the reader to follow the principles. In this respect it probably suffers from being too general and not sufficiently specific in its challenge and application. I expected the book to offer a stronger practical application, especially in light of the foreword being written by a prominent figure from the world of finance.

Your Money Counts

Your Money Counts
by Howard Dayton
Crown Financial Ministries, 1996

This book comprises the course material for Crown Ministries - a small group programme which helps to train Christians to manage their resources from a Scriptural perspective. The material is developed from the point of view of a couple whose marriage was under threat. Financial matters are therefore integrated from the outset into matters of home, family, work not exclusively church. This resource is aimed at individuals and couples who are open to practical biblical perspectives on balancing the claims of work, family and church. This book benefits greatly from the personal examples Howard Dayton uses, not least the experiences of the case study couple. If ALPHA works without Nicky Gumbel’s personal anecdotes there is no reason why this course should not work without Howard Dayton’s!

Your Finances in Changing Times

Your Finances in Changing Times
by Larry Burkett
Inspirational Press, New York, 1993

This book is to me probably the most thorough of all the books on Christian Stewardship. Though it is written for an American audience it is very biblical. Virtually all the principles that Burkett exposes are backed up by biblical references. It is also very challenging – especially over issues such as what is real wealth and how easy it is to be in financial bondage whether we have a load of debt or are a millionaire. It is helpfully practical. Burkett firstly reproduces God’s plan for financial freedom and then moves into practical steps to enable this to happen. He then looks at reasons why Christians are not good stewards. The book concludes with a questionnaire looking at personal, family and spiritual goals, money saving tips and a budget.

Your Money & Your Life- Book, Study Notes & Video

Your Money & Your Life- Book, Study Notes & Video
by Keith Tondeur
Triangle, SPCK, 1996

In Your Money & Your Life the concept of ownership and stewardship are from the outset explored and explained from God’s perspective. Keith addresses the problems related to money from a preventative, rather than curative perspective. Furthermore, the suggestions would be of benefit for all, especially for those beginning to manage their own money of starting a new phase of life, such as going to college, or getting married. This book is easy to read and very well presented.

God's Wisdom for Your Money
by Jim Dunn

What is it about money that makes us want to have more of it, spend it on ourselves and find it difficult to give it away? In his book Dunn, sets out show us that how we acquire money, the attitudes we have towards it and what we do with money have a deep impact on our lifestyles and spiritual life. Despite the fact that this book is not a money management guide Dunn offers useful insights on balancing budgets, debt and giving. However, his main concern is to make us aware about the moral choices we face and the wider social concerns that stem from our use of money and wealth. This is a useful book for all the Christians who want to be faithful stewards of their wealth and who are concerned about the well being of others.
